Philosophy
My strong passion for instructional design is due to the fact that it is a process that can be used for solving problems. I believe that it can be used to solve problems and support my core beliefs and values at the same time.
Education is for everyone.
Egalitarianism
All people regardless of race, creed, religion, or socioeconomic status are deserving of a valuable and proper educational experience.
Creating your own learning.
Constructivism
Students should be taught how to think not just what to think. They should be allowed to develop and express their ideas compellingly and be able to analyze and evaluate information based on what they know and believe. The best education is learning what you want to know not what teachers want to teach you.
Working and learning together.
Collaboration
Learning is ongoing. I believe that you can learn the most from the people around you be it students or colleagues. With the new social aspects of the web you can virtually surround yourself with a community of individuals you admire and respect. This enables you to share experiences and collaborate in a whole new way.
Extra Credit
Here are some links to projects that I have completed outside of the UCD ILT program.
Encore! Support
Encore! is an web based software to create individualized educational programs (IEP) for use by Jeffco special education staff. I created a Encore! Support Page to help reinforce the training we provided to staff when we introduced Encore at the beginning of the 2007-08 school year.
Green Mountain Elementary School
I was asked to manage our school's web site when Jeffco switched to using a commercial content management system (CMS) called Schoolcenter used for school web design. I enjoyed creating the site's banner. I use a photo I had taken of green mountain and edited it in fireworks to match the site's color scheme. All of the content has changed in the site but I'm proud that they have still kept the banner!
Nuestro Programa Bilingue
I loved working on this project because I collaborated with my wife to create this video. Julie was asked to description of her school's elementary bilingual program. Julie wrote the script, captured the audio, and shot the classroom footage. I helped tie it all together with the graphics, titles and music. I think we put together a pretty good product.
RooneyValley.org
This was a local group that was working to oppose some development in west Lakewood. I had the opportunity to create the groups web site using the opensource software Jooloma which is a content management system. It was a valuable experience learning how to use the CMS software and I also learned how to use video capture software and Google Earth to create a video to tell the story he story of the development of the Rooney Valley for our web site. It was another project my wife and I collaborated on to create a cool product.
Research
There are two research papers I completed while I was doing bilingual special education work at CU's Bueno Center . The first is a paper on bilingual education. The second is a paper on dyslexia. These two papers served as anchors for my beliefs and practices in education.
